The whole can have properties that none of its parts possess.

Explanation

Emergence is the phenomenon where complex systems display properties that their individual components do not have. A single water molecule isn't "wet." A single ant isn't "the colony." A single neuron doesn't think. These properties arise from the interaction between many simple parts following simple rules. Emergence is studied in biology, physics, economics, and systems science as a way to understand how complexity can arise without central control.

Everyday example

An anthill solves problems—finding food, building nests, defending itself—without any individual ant doing the "planning." The rules each ant follows are simple; the resulting behavior is impressive.

Why it matters

Emergence explains why reductionism has its limits. Understanding every single part isn't always enough to understand the whole.

Common misconception

Emergence isn't magic or something supernatural. It is the result of interactions—though in practice, it can be hard to predict from the rules alone.

Pick something in your surroundings that seems "planned" (a traffic jam, a trend). Consider whether it might actually emerge without any planning at all.

Many simple parts working together can accomplish something no single part could ever do alone.
