Murphy's Law
Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
Murphy's Law is a well-known adage stating that if anything can go wrong, it will—often at the worst possible moment. The phrase originated in American aerospace engineering in the 1940s and was named after engineer Edward A. Murphy Jr. It is not a literal law of physics, but rather an observation of human psychology and selective memory. We tend to remember the times things go wrong while quickly forgetting the thousands of times everything worked flawlessly. However, in engineering and safety design, the principle is used constructively: if a machine or system *can* be assembled incorrectly, it must be redesigned so that making that mistake becomes impossible.
You drop a piece of buttered toast and it almost always lands butter-side down on the rug. Or you choose the fastest-looking lane at the grocery store, only for it to instantly come to a complete halt.
It is fascinating how the law reveals our brain's tendency toward confirmation bias, while simultaneously serving as a vital principle in engineering to prevent accidents.
People often believe the universe is maliciously targeting them personally, but the phenomenon is actually due to probability, physics, and how human memory operates.
