Confirmation Bias

Why we see what we want to see and how it shapes our worldview without us noticing

Think back to the last time you found yourself in a heated discussion about politics, economics, or a workplace conflict. Were you genuinely open to changing your mind, or were you secretly looking for flaws in the other person's argument while gathering mental evidence for your own stance?

Most of us want to believe that we are rational beings who weigh facts on an objective scale before drawing a conclusion. However, cognitive science shows the opposite. We often form an opinion quickly and intuitively, and then use our reasoning to defend it. This mechanism is called confirmation bias.

Confirmation bias is not a sign of malice or low intelligence. It is a deep-seated cognitive function that saves energy for the brain, but at the same time can lock us into incorrect beliefs and create divides between people.

What is it about?

Confirmation bias describes our tendency to give greater weight to information that aligns with our preconceived notions, while ignoring, rejecting, or forgetting data that contradicts them. The phenomenon manifests itself in three main ways: how we search for information, how we interpret it, and how we remember it.

When we search for information, we ask questions that are already rigged to yield the answer we want. If you believe that coffee is harmful, you search for 'dangers of coffee' instead of 'health effects of coffee'. When we interpret information, we spin ambiguous facts to fit our prevailing hypothesis. And when we remember, we look back on events and recall the times we were right, while mistakes are purged from our memory bank.

A classic cognitive experiment conducted by Peter Wason in the 1960s showed that people have a strong tendency to seek confirming examples rather than attempting to disprove their own theory. Instead of testing whether a hypothesis is incorrect, which is the cornerstone of the scientific method, the human brain almost always tries to prove that it is right.

From an evolutionary perspective, this served a great purpose. Making quick decisions and holding onto a shared belief strengthened cohesion in the early human tribe. Constantly questioning everything required enormous amounts of energy. In today's information-rich society, however, this ancient survival mechanism becomes a pitfall.

Practical Use

Counteracting confirmation bias is not about forcing yourself to be emotionless, but about building systems and habits that challenge your own conclusions.

An effective method in strategic decision-making is to use 'testing the opposite' or 'devil's advocate'. Before you finalize an important decision, set aside time to build the strongest possible argument *against* the decision. Ask yourself: 'If my hypothesis is completely wrong, what signs should I be seeing then?'

In groups, you can apply so-called 'Red Teaming', where a person or subgroup is tasked with finding flaws in the project plan and actively looking for red flags. This defuses the criticism because it becomes an assigned role rather than a personal attack.

Limitations and pitfalls

It is impossible to completely eliminate confirmation bias. Our brain must filter impressions so that we do not become overwhelmed. If we were to question every fundamental assumption every second, we would suffer from decision anxiety and paralysis.

The goal is therefore not complete objectivity in every small situation, but to activate critical thinking when the stakes are high. It is also important not to confuse useful skepticism with nihilism or excessive distrust of all information.

Common Mistakes

One of the most common mistakes is believing that high intelligence or higher education protects against confirmation bias. On the contrary, research shows that intelligent people are often *better* at constructing sophisticated arguments for their preconceived notions. They simply find smarter ways to confirm what they already believe.

Another mistake is thinking that you can cure other people's confirmation bias by overwhelming them with facts. When people are presented with information that contradicts their identity or deeply held beliefs, the 'backfire effect' often kicks in: they entrench themselves even more firmly in their original position.

Finally, it is easy to fall victim to what psychologists call the 'bias blind spot' – the ability to clearly see confirmation bias in one's political opponents or colleagues, while being completely blind to it in oneself.

The human understanding draws everything else to agree with what it has once adopted.
